Many of our research trials are currently paused due to the pandemic.
We are hoping to restart these and set up new studies when possible.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the major providers of sexual health and HIV services in the West Midlands.
UHB provides diagnosis and treatment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) and via Umbrella sexual health services.
The Sexual Health and HIV Research team works with a range of partners, including commercial sponsors, charities, academics and patient groups, to improve the delivery of high quality sexual and reproductive healthcare through:
- a programme of healthcare services research
- increasing research capacity within the field of sexual health and HIV
- contributing to the research and teaching programmes within local universities
- supporting the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network
The research team is part of the Umbrella sexual health service and includes:
- consultants
- research nurses
- research fellows
- PhD students
- a research manager
Other contributions to the wider research community and NHS include:
- publications
- national and international presentations
- editorial support for medical publications
- PhD supervision
- working with the International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI) to support the publication of STI Global Review. This provides a focus for global STI-related issues and highlights the activities of IUSTI
- supporting the delivery of a European-wide sexual health audit network

Common conditions and trial topics
The major research themes the unit focus on include the following.
Sexual health service delivery
A number of commercial/non-commercial and collaborative studies are run via the Sexual Health and HIV Research team for various conditions. This includes trials in response to increasing resistance to existing antimicrobials, service improvement and health economics.
Pelvic inflammatory disease
The department contributes to Cochrane via the editorial board of the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Collaborative Review Group, which has published a Cochrane review for pelvic infection management.
HIV
A number of commercial/non-commercial and collaborative HIV studies are run via the Sexual Health and HIV Research team.
