Radiotherapy at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) is part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK.
Nationally we are recognised as leaders in the fields of Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR), and paediatrics, and routinely treat approximately 4,500 new patients per year.
We have an extensive and exciting range of radiotherapy equipment including:
- Volumetric Modulated Arc Radiotherapy (VMAT) and SABR on five Electa Versas
- two helical Tomotherapy machines
- a Radixact unit
- SRS/SABR on our CyberKnife platform
- Brachytherapy using the Electa Flexitron
- a Gulmay Orthovoltage unit
Our pre-treatment area consists of two wide-bore CT scanners with radiographer led IV contrast and breast mark up, and a radiographer treatment calculation check area. Mould Room and planning services are provided by the Radiotherapy Physics team.
The department has a large workforce and has an established induction programme for all new staff. A competence and preceptorship programme is in place, and all grades of Therapeutic Radiographers are supported by Training and Education Radiographers.
Band 5 and 6 staff rotate through all treatment areas of the department, including Brachytherapy, pre-treatment and CyberKnife.
The department is part of the centres for clinical placements for the BSc Therapeutic Radiography students from Birmingham City University, and all staff are fully involved in the training of these students.
Role development and extension is supported with a quality assurance radiographer, static radiographers, treatment review, site Specialised Radiographers and Consultant Radiographers. Postgraduate study is encouraged, with support available to undertake further education, MSc modules, and attend study days and conferences.
In addition to radiographers, the department is supported by a team of radiotherapy support workers, receptionists and booking staff.
