Departments are responsible for performing a number of investigations.

Services available across all our hospitals

  • Electrocardiography, including 24, 48, 72 hour and 7 day monitoring
  • 24 hour blood pressure monitoring
  • Echocardiogram, including (but not limited to):
    • transthoracic echocardiography
    • transoesophageal echocardiography
    • stress echocardiography including ergo
    • valve clinics
  • Exercise tolerance testing
  • Rapid access chest pain clinics
  • Tilt table testing
  • Routine pacemaker follow up
  • Left and right heart catheterisation
  • Implantable loop recorder insertion and follow up
  • Routine pacemaker implant and follow up
  • Signal-averaged ECG

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB)

  • Echo for transplant & LVAD assessment
  • Six minute walking tests and shuttle walking tests
  • Cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET)

 Cross-site services

  • Pacemaker, cardiac defibrillator and cardiac resynchronisation therapy implant and follow up at QEHB and Good Hope Hospital (GHH)

Invasive cardiology

  • Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) at QEHB and Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH)
  • Structural interventions including adult congenital heart disease and trans-aortic valve implantation at QEHB
  • Implantable cardioverter defibrillator and cardiac resynchronisation therapy implantation at QEHB and Good Hope Hospital (GHH)
  • Electrophysiology studies and ablation for supraventricular tachycardia, atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia at QEHB
  • Cardiac biopsy at QEHB 
  • Mechanical circulatory support device implant, including Impella and intra-aortic balloon pump at QEHB and BHH
  • Cardiopulmonary exercise testing at QEHB and BHH
