The Radiation Physics and Protection Service (RRPPS) of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), is the largest and most experienced medical physics organisation in the West Midlands. Based in a purpose-built facility in Kings Norton, a few miles from the main Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) site, we provide comprehensive radiation protection and physics services to the Trust and external customers.

Services are provided by registered clinical scientists and clinical technologists supported by experienced administrative and technical staff.  Staff include accredited radiation protection advisers, radioactive waste advisers, laser protection advisers, instrument calibration specialists, and magnetic resonance safety experts.

Radiation protection and quality assurance services are provided to NHS and private hospitals, dentists, vets, industrial customers and educational facilities, using:

  • Diagnostic x-ray equipment
  • Ultrasound equipment
  • Lasers
  • MRI scanners
  • Radionuclides
  • Radiotherapy

RRPPS is an Approved Dosimetry Service that has been recognised by the Health and Safety Executive since the introduction of the original Ionising Radiations Regulations in 1985.

We are also a secondary standard calibration laboratory providing an independent, high quality calibration service for a wide range of diagnostic X-ray and radiation protection instrumentation to both health sector and industry sector customers.

Additionally, we run nationally-advertised radiation protection supervisor training courses and provide training on laser and MRI safety to our customers.
