Pharmacy

The Pharmacy Clinical Trials Service plays a key role in delivering clinical trials of investigational medicinal products (CTIMPs) across University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).

Working closely with the Research, Development and Innovation team, the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Service:

  • safeguards subjects, investigators, research teams and the Trust by ensuring that investigational medicinal products (IMPs) are appropriate for use and are procured, handled, stored, and used safely and correctly
  • ensures that IMPs are managed and dispensed to subjects in accordance with the current approved protocol
  • ensures that all pharmacy clinical trial procedures comply with relevant guidelines and regulations

The team assists in delivering a range of trials from phase one healthy-volunteer studies to phase four post-marketing studies. These include UHB sponsored studies as well as hosted commercial and non-commercial studies.

All UHB sites deliver studies. The team is experienced in setting up trials using novel chemotherapeutic drugs, monoclonal antibodies and gene and cellular therapies and has close working relationships with:

  • NIHR/Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility
  • Midlands and Wales Advanced Therapy Treatment Centre
  • Birmingham Experimental Cancer Medicines Centre (ECMC)
  • NIHR Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre
  • University of Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit
